type='text'>MASS LITERACY EDUCATION: AS A PREREQUISITE FOR NATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

At the 3 days seminar conducted by SUCCESS FOR YOUTH INTERNATIONAL at ALLSAINTS COMMUNITY SCHOOL PORT HARCOURT RIVERS STATE NIGERIA,the youth president honourable Mike Ebuka made it known at the meeting the issues with regards to the relationships between literacy and education;and development, for one who desires an end if he is serious and desirous to get the end in question must necessarily desire the means. He said that mass literacy and education are few of the prerequisites required in order to achieve this lofty objective. He argue vehemently that literacy and education of the populace make the people capable to contribute meaningfully to the development of themselves and the society;as these have the potency of generating skills which can be applied to the environment in order to humanize our environment in answer to the genesis injunction of 'subdue the earth.....'mass literacy and education imply more than we have just said.Reasons shows that it is qute impossible for any nation to understand what growth and development in areas of human endeavours be it in economy, politics, technology etc.. without education and for all to be educated, there is every need to make education FREE. Free education therefore becomes a sine quo non for real and lasting development of nations today. This is because education is the life-wire of any meanigful project in the society. If, as majority are poor then education if not made free becomes the preserve of the wealthy. This by implication means that over 90% of the citizens will remain uneducated and illiterates. The relevance of free education can be seen in the following lines,"our economy cannot be said to have reached 'the subsistence'level unless we are able to provide every human being in our land/nation with the opportunity to be able to read. For the modern man is not really modern if he cannot read and sign his name".He said that as the prosperity and level of development of a nation depends on the character and enlightenment of its citizens. He went on to say that defining education is not easy or simple;definitions abound ,as theere are different methods of educational process, aims or functions of education. To the common man when the word 'education'is mentioned, his mind runs to the schools. This is a formalistic and lop-sided view of education. Education is more than that.Experts agree that education involves transmission of knowledge, values, beliefs, skillsetc.,of a culture,it is also the process of acculturation through which the individual is helped to attain the development of his potentialities and their maximum activation when necessary according to the right reason and to achieve his self-fulfilment.
Education is not only formal, does not end in the classroom, it is prior even to the classroom. It of course means more than merely imparting knowlege and teaching a certain kind of behaviour, it is also even mainly formation of character.Education is essentially social. In the bid to have a holistic view of education, which we hold is a prerequisite, development would not occur. To talk of mass literacy and mass education without emphasis on quality education is nonsensical and a misnomer. When we talk of mass education some may think we are only singing. Not at all;we are talking of a vital issue, which we believe is possible and relevant. We need everybody's contribution to the development of our society because everybody is important. It is ony with free education that the talents of each of us could be used for the development of our society. If some of the pominent men of the west had no opportunity for free education, the strides made int he fields of sciencelearning could not have been made possible.Education should be made accessible to all,so as to test the intelligence and talent of all.Mass education is doubly important, for it is only when the citizens are educated that they can know the laws of the state and keep them in order to maintain peace. As we are crashing ourselves to the technology base in our country, this may become impossible for the gadgets or machines to be used in achieving this objective. We need educated and skillful people to attend to these and as over 90% of the citizens are poor, this hope of making our country have a technological base becomes futile. Many may think it is not possible, they will say it is too costly etc.Whatever they tend to think, I still hold that free education is a possibility.we are not in doubt of the relevance of free education, for man is a creative agent and an active force in the humanization of the evironment.Where majority is left uneducated or at best half-baked education because they go to school when there is free education and leave when free education stops,we have little hope of humanzing our environment. There is need for free education to ensure the availability of human labour for the machinery invented today becomes absolete tomorrow. What any nation needs to do is to design the educational programmes in such a away as to take care of estimated manpower need of the society.By so doing, the money spent in schools will come back to the government through industries and taxes levied on individuals. With good design, conscientious effotrs and burning desire any nation can provide free education for her citizens at all levels though that will be costly. To become developed we need to educate our citizens for 'every nation which has reached a certain stage of development is instinctly impelled to practice education'.

EXAMINATION MALPRACTICE AND THE QUEST FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE IN NIGERIA.

Examination malpractice does not promote the process of meaningful acculturation and education through which the individuals are helped to attain the development of their potentialities and their maximum activations based on right reason in order to achieve perfect self fulfilment. For every cause ther e must be an affect. It does not promote institutions of higher learning with roles aimed at promoting national development especially in the development of high level manpower. Examination malpractice does not make higher institutions in Nigeria among the best means for developing a national consciousness.
Conversely, academic excellence promotes collaborative research based on scholarly capabilities to accomplish the task ahead of one,s expertise.Academic excellence helps to encourage the learning of more about the basic of laws. Academic excellence promotes a better understanding of our society and environment. It promotes curiosity, creativity and applies the best of laws to the solution of practical societal problems. Academic excellence inculates the proper value orientation for the survival of individuals and society. It is observed that academic excellence stimulates the sustainable development of intellectual capabilities, skills and balanced understanding of society. A high degree of imagination enduranceand ablitiy to work with others are required in promoting academic excellence.
Academic excellence remains a veritable tool used by the poor, the alienated and marginalised in their liberation struggle, int he enthronement of the dignity of man and commitment to unity. There is a strong feeling that higher institutions are founded on the wisdom that knowledge is propagated and dissemenated to individuals. Academic excellence is promoted int he use of teaching, research and public services to solve societal problems. It encourages advancement of all branches of learning in all branches of education.Academic excellence enhances minds whose strtegies for success emphasize the desire for high quality results, wise investment based on oreintation of staff attitudes to effect pragmatic teaching and development output, good governance and management statement and the operational objectives of the teritary institutions in nigeria and in the world per say.It emphasizes the involvement of students, staff and government in discipline which embodies endurance, confidence and determination to atart afresh when previous efforts failed. discipline gives rise to self reliance which entails confidfence in one,s self and abilities amalgam of a disciplined mind with self confidence will no doubt yied excellence. A male puts his erect(hard)penis into a female's vagina and spurts sperm inside her during sex. her ovaries release an ovum (egg) each month and ovum and the sperm join in her tube. this is when the magic happens and the cells divide, move down the tube into the womb and begin to form a baby. all it takes is one ovum and one sperm and before you can say"ooh! baby," you've got one.

babies and children are wonderful, they deserve parents who want them and will cherish them. they also need food, clothing eeducation, medicines and a million and one things that cost money.if you leave school to have a baby, or work to support one there is good chance that you will struggle to earn enough money to do what you want for your child, let alone for yourself.so, preventing pregnancy when we are young is really important. the only really safe sex, is no sex.BEFORE you decide to get into full sex, go to a clinic and get some information and advice. go alone, with your partner, parentsmor friends but definitely go!

WHAT IS EDUCATION ALL ABOUT

<img style="float:left; since it is said that"no man is an embodiment of knowledge" it is very clear thereforethat no man can claim to have acquired all forms of knowledge. every individual needs knowledge for various reasons. it is rather disheartening to realise that in this global village, the world, there are still many communities in the third world countries that are blatantly ignorant of the recent trends in our changing world ranging from health issues such as the reality of Aids and its preventive meeasures to psychological issues like advanced levels of stress which are prevalent in advanced countries where the drive or quest for high productivity and efficiency has subjected people to the malady of working 24 hours round the clock without any room for recuperation. All these group of people and many others seriously need to be educated. And that includees you amd me. Education knows no excption, no boundary,no racism nor age group. it is for all.

STRATEGIES ON HOW TO ACHIEVE THEM:
there are manifold ways of obtaining solutions to diverse problems.however these solutions may vary with individuals or organisations. inlike manner,SUCCESS FOR YOUTH INTERNATIONAL has deviced various strategies with which it intends to participate in the creation of an educated world starting from our community.
1.organisation of seminars: this involves calling together a targeted audience where selective topics are deliberated upon by sesoned professionals in the field as well as members of this organisation with the aim of educating the audience.
2.constructive selection of an audience:it involves taking our seminars or lectures to those primitive communities where accessibility to genuine information is very low.
3.personal contact: this is a situation where the members of the organisation go all out to relate personally with people, thereby, establishing some level of trust, which is very essential for their acceptance of the change that is assocaited with education.
4.electronic media: this involves the use of television and radio broadcasts, cds, tapes etc to reach out to people in those areas or locations that we are unable to reach out to in person, owing to geographical limitations.this will indeed go a long way to get a greater number of people informed.
5.scholarships/grants: we have discovered from our findings that a lot of intelligent children waste in poverty int he remote villages of some part of nigeria. this strategy is designed to instill the desire and drive to learn in the children and also to sponsor some selected ones up to their senior secondary schools.we sincerley which we can give sponsorship up to the university education but we are reeally limited by funds. so many teenagers who graduate from secondary schools tend to retire to their fathers farms without any hope to furtheer their education. this actually is a pain in our heart and we pray that very soon we shall receive help in this regard.

THE NEED FOR GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION:
the media which presently is the quikest means of spreading information to alot of people, is in th hands of the government. the government can partner with organisations in order to ggrant access to the media house for adverts, talkshows, sensitization campaigns and other programs that can enlighten the public.
the government can also help by giving busary or scholarships to students, organisations. This will bring huge encouragement to the students and determination to learn and be educated. for when the people are educated, the nation is also educated. Another area the government is expected to offer help is in the provision of materials which are essential during campaign/crusades. materials such as health magazines, motivational items etc. Since such are very expeensive for private organisations to produce in a large quantity as the target is the public. If the government can provide some of these materials as their contributions to the countrys education, the work of sensitization will be much easier.

EDUCATION IS ALL WE NEED

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 75px; height: 107px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_p-DiNxFYZc8/SQPAmHYQtaI/AAAAAAAAAAg/tjOF0Iyv5JE/s320/ja17-0008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5261260550747239842" />
is it true that our nation can do without education? the simple answer to this question is NO.we cannot do without it.when we talk about education it deals with all aspect of human endeavours as it highlights-human rights to education(i.e going to school),child abuse, drug abuse, health issues such as hiv/aids,gender inequality and our enviroment as a whole.thus, it is very impossible to do without it.

human rights education:every individual in any nation must go to school to learn how to read and write, afterwhich thourough learning process is embarked on, trying to describe and discuss past events and so on.here you are taught various subjects like mathematics, chemistry, english language, physics economics, literature, etc.but there is a problem im regards to subject taught in schools. this is seen in the area of peer education -hiv/aids should be made into the schools curriculum as subject/course on his own, where students would be taught about the dreaded disease, the cause people involve, prevention and so on.by so doing the rapid spread of this very disease will be minimised. students must be taught on the way forward.

In our community today, women especially the girls are not allowed to go to school. From the previous interview parents said that women place is in the kitchen. thus, education is not meant for them. They supported their views by saying that girls are not responsible for anything in the nation, when they are matured they will be married and taken away. this is totally wrong. women have the right to education. they must go to school and learn so as to eradicate the hidden illiteracy in them. when they are educated the views and way of thinkimg will as well change towards the positive.

government should look into this very issue. women especially girls must go to school. the issue of peer education must be dtrongly recommended by the government into schools curriculum as this will help stop the sprea of this dangerous disease in the society.................presented by the executive director of success for youth international on a seminar at the university of Nnamdi azikiwe.
